Audacity of Hope (Genre - Analysis)

Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize - now thats news !!
I heard this news on the radio, while driving ...and I thought it was a joke ...but when the RJ was repeating the same thing after every song, I was surprised to say the least. The first thought that came to my mind was ... what did he do to get the highest prize of humanity..its been 9 months since he has taken over the worlds most powerful post,18 months back I did not know who he was..like most of the world. What was the Nobel committee thinking ??

I have never liked the petty national politics and have been more fascinated by world politics and I must confess I have two pet hates... Pakistan and American Foreign policy. Its foreign policy is like a ego-maniacs bullying -only one thing matters - America ; If it meant destroying a few countries ... it would. Nothing personified it better than the previous president. They say power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely... now imagine an idiot with absolute power .... the world (also read as Mess) we are living is now the works of that spoilt child.

Then came a modest man out of no where, with one mantra "Yes We Can". The speech he gave when he was declared as the presidential nominee for the democrats still gives me goose bumps. The man born to an Kenyan immigrant, divorced parents ..brought up in Kenya, Indonesia and Hawaii...had one thing that stood out .."The Audacity to Hope".

He even wrote a book called "The Audacity of Hope"(2006)..but the origins of this phrase can be traced way back to a speech in 2004.
In his speech addressing the Democratic National Convention in 2004, Obama said:
In the end, that's what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or a politics of hope? John Kerry calls on us to hope. John Edwards calls on us to hope. I'm not talking about blind optimism here -- the almost willful ignorance that thinks unemployment will go away if we just don't talk about it, or the health care crisis will solve itself if we just ignore it. No, I'm talking about something more substantial. It's the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs; the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores; the hope of a young naval lieutenant bravely patrolling the Mekong Delta; the hope of a millworker's son who dares to defy the odds; the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too. Hope in the face of difficulty. Hope in the face of uncertainty. The audacity of hope!

Hope is the nectar of life, it has the power to bring back life from the very brink. This man "Barak Hussain Obama" promised this very nectar called "Hope". And it was this that the Nobel Committee recognized.

There are two kinds of Nobel peace prize "Achievement" based and "Aspiration" based. Obama's award, announced Friday, is a classic case of an aspirational award. The committee cited this "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples" -- in itself is an acknowledgement that those efforts have yet to yield results. It also mentioned his push to eliminate nuclear weapons, a dream that Ronald Reagan also had but failed to achieve.

Its not easy to live up to this award. And he may find it a heavy burden, especially as he must always keep U.S. interests--not worldwide acclaim--at the forefront of his policies. This is where I give 100 % to the Nobel committee, they have actually checkmated any move to destabilize the world before they could by the American Policies and who better than the man who chairs these policies. Kudos.

No time other than now, will Mr.Obama have to believe in his mantra of "Yes we can". And we all, for a better world, should have the audacity to hope that he can.

  1. Hope can make a sick man walk, but a person promising hope gets a noble prize? can we compare it with the other noble prize winners like Mother Teresa? There is no denying that this is the highest boost for his slogan "Yes we can". But let him live up to his expectations and then the honor can be bestowed on him. Your angle of looking at this is interesting indeed but such a high accolade for someone who has just won the election is not justified.

  2. Agreed ..your point is very valid. But you should also take into consideration the dynamics of world politics. There is a quote in spiderman movie "With great power comes great responsibility". What power without responsibility has done to this world can be seen in the 8 years of Mr.Bush. If there is one man who has to the power to take bold and firm decisions to save the world from total chaos it is Mr.Obama. Take any major world organisation like UN or IMF or World bank or NATO - with vetoing power they are nothing but puppets in the hands of the US and the other superpowers. So in that context I think what the Nobel peace prize has done is to build a barrier of consciousness in Mr.Obama and it hopes that when it comes to making a decision which will affect world peace - he would choose peace.
