Inglourious Basterds (Genre - Review)

Finally saw the movie Inglourious Basterds. The reason why I chose to see this movie were

1. It was a Quentin Tarantino movie - he has a wacky and at times brilliant sense of film making, quite gruesome at times and having a weird sense of humor( kindly refer to Kill Bill). If not for the plot watch this movie for the direction and background score preferably in a theater.

2. The name and the plot ( this was a let down) - I thought the plot was good and the actors were very good and it definitely had a punch in its title ..and notice its been willingly mis-spelt.

3. Brad Pitt - NO he is not mouthwatering, bicep wielding hunk but a heavily accented American assassin. I thought he was wasted in the movie - but still he is watchable for his sheer ease of execution.

surprise ..surprise ... couple of reasons why I did not regret my decision to watch this movie.

1. Christoph Waltz as the Jew Hunter - brilliant in the portrayal of German Investigating Officer. You will love hating him - he is whats called as a smooth criminal .No wonder he had won the best actor award for his role in Cannes this year.

2. Melanie Laurent - as a sole survivor of a massacre and later the very beautiful french lady - she looked damn pretty in spite of having such a non-glamorous role.

3.Performance - making a period movie with lots of french, German and Italian is not easy - but to my surprise the acting was too good, every character though not being done justice did give their best shot.

4. Romance - actually its very hard to call it romance - but you do see a sniff of it here and there. These subtle moments in a throat slitting movie - it really requires a good craftsman to do it.

5. The sets - impeccable and impressive - perfect locations, and props.

6. Language - I hate to admit it, but French is a beautiful language - sometimes with the subtitles you do get confused whether its German or French - It wont matter - in spite of not understanding a single sentence other than words like Merci, Oui, Madame - you love listening to it ....just flows like poetry.

and the reasons why the movie could have been better.

1. The biggest drawback - they should have had some more meat in the plot. At times I felt probably they skipped a few reels - a little background to the characters and a little more action from Mr.Brad Pitt would have done wonders to the movie.

2. They should have stuck to history - tampering with history is a bad choice specially dealing with Hitler in the end - that's not what history says..... are u listening Tarantino ??

3. They show Hitler as a screaming joker and Churchill as a smoking puppet - it sometimes makes you think whether its a serious movie or a comical one - I still do not know.

4. Adding Mike Myers as a British general - naaaaaaaaaah bad choice he was better off in Austin powers.

5. Diane Kruger - Wasted - Small role, but she proved why she is a fine actress.

Overall my verdict - Good - Watchable once (***)
